The word "Bagatelle" has a double meaning. It means at the same time "small property", but also designates a frivolity, or a love affair. The Clos Bagatelle in St-Chinian in the Languedoc perfectly expresses these two poles, between the joy of living and the rigour of a job well done.
The first vines were planted in 1623 on this property located in St-Chinian, after Pierre Mercadier had cleared the land. Since the 20th century, the family tradition has been that Clos Bagatelle is passed down from mother to daughter, and not from father to son, as is the normal practice. For the record, the Clos Bagatelle's coat of arms is a...woman in armour! Currently, it is Christine Simon, sister of Luc, who runs the estate. The division of tasks was naturally done with Luc who looks after the vines and Christine who is in charge of marketing the wines of Clos Bagatelle. In the cellar, brother and sister share the tasks.
"A sure value of the appellation, this vast 60 ha estate offers with this confidential cuvée a selection of 2 ha of Syrah (60%), Grenache and Mourvèdre. The garnet colour is tinged with brilliant tiled reflections. Notes of roasting and cocoa dominate the first nose, inherited from fourteen months in barrel, before aeration opens the door to black fruits. The roundness and suppleness of the palate is underlined by tannins that are certainly present but coated, accompanied by toasty notes from the oak barrel. An already pleasant bottle, but which can also be expected for a year or two. A partridge in a casserole will be an accompaniment of choice. " Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2014
