At the top of the gravelly hilltop of Arsac, the highest plateau in the Margaux appellation, are the 52 hectares of vines of Château du Tertre.

The vineyard is probably thousands of years old, famous owners such as Thomas de Montaigne, Pierre Mitchell or Henri de Koegniswater having left archives since the 12th century. In 1855, the classification requested by Napoleon III granted it the rank of 5th Grand Cru. Unfortunately, phylloxera, economic crises and the two wars were fatal to Château du Tertre. In 1961, the Capbern-Gasqueton family, owners of Calon-Ségur, acquired the estate, renovated the beautiful building built in the 18th century and replanted a few hectares. But it was in 1997 that Eric Albada-Jelgersma, also the owner of Giscours and a Dutch investor, bought the Château and put it back on its feet in its entirety, had a new vat room built and thus restored its titles of nobility and its rank of 1855. He is particularly well advised by Jacques Pelissier, former winegrower of Château Cos d'Estournel. The technical director today is Alexander Van Beek.

The vineyard of Château du Tertre is planted in one piece, with a great homogeneity, some vines reaching nearly 60 years old! The height of the mound on which the estate is created allows it to benefit from an ideal amount of sunshine and avoid spring frost. A small stream between the two crests participates in the drainage. The grape varieties are divided between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in majority, then Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The soils are made up of Garonne gravel and sands from the Quaternary period. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 to 15 months.

Deep garnet in colour, the robe of Château du Tertre has beautiful purple reflections. Its nose has expressive notes of blackcurrant and black berries, with light touches of lavender. The tannins are crunchy, the attack on the palate is a little mineral, even salty, but immediately gives way to aromas of raspberries and blueberries. To be enjoyed within a few years, accompanied by a filet mignon with small vegetables.

Alba by Tertre blanc 2024
Maintenant – 2029 92/100

Alba by Tertre 2024
