Elegantly set on a ridge of Garonne gravel dating from the quaternary period - like all the terroir of the Saint-Julien appellation - the Château Beychevelle and its 250 hectares of gardens, forests and vines is situated at the south-eastern tip of the appellation, on the banks of the Gironde.
Built in 1565 by Bishop François de Foix-Candale, the Château has maintained a prestigious reputation and a history flirting with legend from the beginning. In the 17th century, it is said that the name of the Château dates back to the time when the first Duke of Epernon, Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, demanded to see the sails of the boats sailing on the Garonne River in front of his estate lowered, i.e. "Bêcha vêla" in Gascon, "Baisse voile", Beychevelle. The emblem of the ship with a griffin's head and whose sails are lowered would date from this period. A second legend has it that a few years later, when the second Duke of Epernon was the new owner, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin's troop, Molière, was housed at the estate. In 1757, the building was rebuilt by the Marquis Etienne-François de Brassier, who endowed the Château with a port in order to export his wines directly to England. In 1825, it was the turn of Pierre-François Guestier, mayor of Saint-Julien and Bordeaux wine merchant, to take over Château Beychevelle and have it classified 4th Grand Cru in the 1855 classification.
The estate will be further enlarged by Armand Heine, a Parisian banker and cousin of the poet Heinrich Heine. At the end of the 19th century, the Achille-Fould family acquired the estate and kept it until 1989, when on the death of Aymar Achille-Fould, the Suntory company and then the Grands Millésimes de France company became the buyers. The wives of the various owners have played a predominant role during its history, such as Madame Guestier, Madame Heine, to whom the Château owes its splendid gardens, Marie-Louis Fould and Elisabeth de Foucaud. Nicknamed The Versailles of the Médoc, Château Beychevelle continues its work as a patron of the arts by hosting a writing festival and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
Philippe Blanc, an agricultural engineer, is today the manager of the Château. In March 2017, the new wine storehouse built by Arnaud Boulain was inaugurated, a symbol of the lowered sails and the Gironde waves with its architecture all in bay windows and undulations. The new installations include plot-by-plot vats, adapted to each vine.
The qualities of the terroir, which allows the heat to be restored to the vines during cold nights and drains off excess water during heavy rains, are characteristic of the Saint-Julien appellation. Château Beychevelle vinifies according to the strictest rules of sustainable viticulture and has obtained certification. The grape varieties are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, the rest being mainly Merlot, a little Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Harvesting is done by hand and half of the wine is aged for 18 months in new wooden barrels.
The wine of Château Beychevelle is generous. Its robe is deep red, even garnet. Powerful and well-balanced at the base, it evolves towards the superb as it ages and with great regularity for decades. On the nose, floral aromas accompany red fruits, especially morello cherries, bringing out with freshness an expressive and heady bouquet. On the palate, it is racy, greedy and long on the finish. It will be ideal with a rib of beef, a simple entrecote, a dish with black truffles or a duck confit.

Hervorragend in diesem Jahr.
