Located to the west of Saint-Estèphe, Château de Pez is one of the nuggets to be discovered on Bordeaux's left bank. Founded in 1452, it is one of the oldest wine estates in Saint-Estèphe. In 1585, it was bought by the de Pontac family, owners of Château Haut-Brion, thus entering the big league. It remained in their ownership until the French Revolution, when it was sold as national property and passed on to various middle-class Bordeaux families. In 1995, it was acquired by Jean-Claude Rouzaud, grandfather of Frédéric Rouzaud, the 7th generation to run Champagne Louis Roederer, opening the doors of Bordeaux to the prestigious Champagne house. Château de Pez became part of "The Roederer Collection", a constellation of small estates whose unique terroir represents an unexploited jewel. Frédéric's father immediately saw the enormous potential of this unclassified wine. In the 2000s, a major overhaul was undertaken, with the vines replanted according to a plot plan designed to balance the roundness of the Merlot (44%) and the structured Cabernet Sauvignon (47%), with the remainder being Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 18 stainless steel truncated-cone vats were added to an entirely new winery. In 2003, Château de Pez was classified as an exceptional Cru Bourgeois. Today, the estate is run by Nicolas Glumineau, also director of Château Pichon Comtesse.
The vineyard sits on 42 hectares of a single remarkable piece of land on an ideal location. Its elevated position on a valley provides ideal drainage. Its proximity to the estuary prevents frosts, which are extremely rare in Pez. The wind prevents vine diseases by drying out the vines. The soil is composed of Garonne gravel on a clay subsoil. The 16-strong team, led by Blandine Prévot, cultivates the vines mechanically in the traditional way, using organic fertilisers. Biodynamic farming has been introduced on certain hectares, hedges have been planted, beehives have been installed and level 3 of High Environmental Value has been achieved. Vinification is parcel-based and the 600 French oak barrels are meticulously chosen by the Cellar Master......and ageing lasts 12 months.
On the nose, Château de Pez is fruity with fragrances of wild strawberry and cherry, and floral with scents of iris, rose and cedar. On the palate, it is creamy, silky and round. The tannins are well-integrated, and chocolate notes emerge after the sweetness of ripe black fruit. On the finish, the mineral side appears and the finish is precise and long.
Today, the Roederer challenge has been met, Château de Pez, with its elegance, length on the palate and finesse, has all the hallmarks of a Grand Cru.

18 mois d'élevage en barriques dont 50 % neuves pour Pez 2025. De bonne intensité, le bouquet révèle des notes de cassis, une touche de cacao ainsi que du bois de réglisse. L'élevage apparaît en arrière-plan et fait office de vecteur olfactif ; il soutient tous les éléments présents et c'est bien pour cela qu'il est là ! Le caractère onctueux de l'attaque ouvre la voie à un vin précis, puissant et parfaitement équilibré. Le fait d'être veloutés n'empêche pas les tannins d'avoir du relief, ce qui leur permet de bien assimiler le caractère aiguisé de la structure acide. Un vin qui regroupe énergie et vigueur avec une harmonie exemplaire. Tous les éléments se complètent mutuellement sans qu'aucun d'entre eux ne prenne le dessus. Un vin frais et salivant, ponctué par une finale persistante avec un retour aromatique réjouissant et annonciateur d'un travail appliqué.

18 Monate Ausbau in Barriques, davon 50 % neu, für den Pez 2025. Das Bouquet ist intensiv und offenbart Noten von schwarzen Johannisbeeren, einen Hauch von Cacao sowie Süßholz. Der Ausbau tritt im Hintergrund auf und fungiert als olfaktorischer Vermittler; er untermalt alle vorhandenen Elemente, und genau dafür ist er da! Der cremige Auftakt ebnet den Weg für einen präzisen, kraftvollen und perfekt ausbalancierten Wein. Die samtige Textur hindert die Tannine nicht daran, sich zu profilieren, wodurch sie den scharfen Charakter der Säurestruktur gut aufnehmen können. Ein Wein, der Energie und Kraft mit vorbildlicher Harmonie vereint. Alle Elemente ergänzen sich gegenseitig, ohne dass eines davon die Oberhand gewinnt. Ein frischer und stimmiger Wein, unterstrichen von einem langanhaltenden Finale mit einem erfreulichen aromatischen Nachhall, der von sorgfältiger und exakter Arbeit zeugt.

Verführerischer Frucht, noble Röstnoten, dunkle Frucht, Kirschen, Veilchen weisser Pfeffer; cremiger Auftakt, weich, rund, finessenreich und sehr charmant, man möchte gleich schlucken; langer, feinwürziger Abgang. Der vielleicht geschliffenste de Pez, den ich je verkosten konnte. (Trinken von 2030 bis 2050)

De Pez 2023 zeigt von Anfang an Ambitionen, die mit Frische und Cabernet Sauvignon verbunden sind, bzw. mit Noten von schwarzer Johannisbeere und Eukalyptus, die von einem Hauch Süßholz ergänzt werden. Elegant und präzise vom ersten Moment an, kann sich der Wein seiner Harmonie rühmen, vor allem vor dem Hintergrund sehr feiner und dennoch kräftiger Tannine. Ja, man kann durchaus subtil und dennoch kraftvoll sein.

De Pez 2023 affiche d'emblée des ambitions liées à la fraîcheur et au Cabernet Sauvignon, respectivement des notes de cassis et d'eucalyptus complétées par une touche de réglisse. Élégant et fin en bouche, le vin peut se targuer de son caractère harmonieux et savoureux, de surcroit dans un contexte de tannins très fins et néanmoins vigoureux. Eh oui, on peut être subtil tout en étant puissant.
