In the North-West of the commune of Saint-Emilion, on the gentle slopes surrounding the plateau, is Château Grand Mayne. As its name indicates, it was in the 18th and 19th century the largest property of Saint-Emilion, with its 288 hectares. Belonging at that time to the Laveau family, it passed through the hands of various owners before arriving in 1934 to the Nony family, already in the wine trade. In 2001, on the death of Jean-Pierre Nony, his wife Marie-Françoise took over with her two sons, Jean-Antoine and Damien. Jean-Antoine has been alone at the helm since 2011, with two guardian angels at his side, Michel Rolland, his "tonton pinard", who is his discreet and efficient advisor for the blends, and Louis Mitjavile, from Château Tertre Roteboeuf, for the maturing process. Since 1934, three generations of Nony have pampered this wine, proud to perpetuate this tradition while around them, large groups are buying up the Bordeaux estates.
Today, with its 17 hectares, Château Grand Mayne still imposes itself and is spread over one of the best hillsides in the region. Its soils are composed of clay, clayey-limestone soil and clayey sands. This diversity has the advantage of offering a wine with multiple facets due to the mixture of all the aromatic components.
Meticulous care is given to the vine and its work. Those located on the slopes are grassed to avoid corrosion. The grape varieties are mainly Merlot, then Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The harvest is done manually, the vinification is done in temperature-controlled vats and the maturing in oak barrels.
The wine produced at Château Grand Mayne has character, an exceptional bouquet. It is built for long cellaring. In recent years, it has become even more appreciated by connoisseurs as it has even gained in finesse, its tannins are more discreet, the presence of fruit is evident, thanks to a crunchy acidity. On the palate, it has aromas of plum and black cherry, vanilla and toasted brioche. It has a dark ruby colour. It has even almost been classified as a Premiers Grands Crus classés. It has gradually established itself as a wine of great refinement and receives rave reviews every year.
It will express all its power accompanied by a duck with cherries or braised red meat.
