Since archaeological traces dating from the Roman period have been found in the basement of the Château Mazeyres, it is likely that the current Directory building was built on the foundations of a Gallo-Roman villa. It is to the Querre family, wine merchants of Libourne in the 19th century, that we owe the creation of this vineyard. The vineyard remained in the hands of this family until it was bought by the Caisse de Retraite de la Société Générale in 1988. In 1992, Alain Moueix, the fourth generation of renowned winegrowers, was appointed director of Château Mazeyres and remains so today, despite the property being transferred to the hands of a subsidiary of Société Générale, SOGECAP.

Situated on the outskirts of Libourne, in Pomerol, the property has very recently been extended to 25.5 hectares, as Château Mazeyres has bought back many parcels. These are located on soils composed of sand ("Catusseau plateau" rich in iron filth) and gravelly-sandy clay. The original soils surrounding the estate are made of fine clayey gravel.

In addition to the spectacular expansion of the property, allowing it to become one of the largest in Pomerol, important changes were made. In fact, thanks to the investments made by new buyers, Alain Moueix initiated a transformation of the vineyard (80% Merlot, uprooting of Cabernet Sauvignon plants, new Cabernet Francs and Petit Verdot plants), a refurbishment of the equipment (small thermo-regulated stainless steel vats, new barrel cellar with 6 different coopers) and finally, a drastic changeover to sustainable organic farming (AFAQ certification, Terra Vitis, manual harvesting etc.).

All these innovations have enabled Alain Moueix and his team (Ludovic Guibert and Jean-Michel Bernard, as well as Gilles Pauquet, consulting oenologist) to offer a wine with a wide range of tastes. The recent addition of the Petit Verdot grape variety has brought a touch of acidity and freshness to the velvety Merlot. This was Alain Moueix's objective: to compensate for the power of the wines of Château Mazeyres by giving them length in the mouth, roundness and complexity.

Success is complete. Critics of Château Mazeyres' latest creations describe them as silky, balanced and harmonious: notes of red plum, blond tobacco, peppermint and candied fruit, a sweet, honeyed and spicy attack, with a full finish where aromas of chocolate and strawberry jam burst forth.
