A document from the 17th century mentions the wine-growing lands of the current Sociando-Mallet Castle as belonging to a Basque aristocrat named "Sociondo". Confiscated in 1793 because it belonged to a royalist notary, then sold at public auction, the land and the estate - henceforth spelled "Sociando" - passed into the hands of a certain Jean Lamothe. His niece inherited it in 1831 and, being the wife of Achille Mallet, the Château became Sociando-Mallet. Numerous owners followed one after the other, increasingly neglecting the potential of the extraordinary terroir. When in 1969 Jean Gautreau, looking for a piece of vineyard land for one of his clients in the framework of the trading company he created in 1957, discovered the hidden nugget that is the Sociando-Mallet estate, only 5 hectares remained, almost abandoned. Grabbing the business on the fly, he fell in love with the place, the view of the Gironde estuary, the potential of this tiny property and bought it back for himself. The first vintages produced with the help of Gérard Cler, master of the winery (which in fact is a garage...), are so promising that he launches into the restoration of the installations and gradually buys back the surrounding vineyards.
Today, the estate has 83 hectares of splendid vines and Château Sociando-Mallet is - as the motto says: "neither classified nor bourgeois... Sociando-Mallet quite simply! ». In recent years, Sylvie, his only daughter, has taken over the reins. She knows her business, having grown up on the estate with the seasons and the harvests under the wing of her father. While nothing predestined him for such a fate, Jean Gautreau, who at 18 played in the junior semi-final at Roland Garros, can be proud of his achievement, having managed to impose a great wine (often compared to the best Seconds Crus Classés of the Médoc) off the marked paths and official courses.
Situated in the commune of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Saint-Estèphe in the Haut-Médoc, the vineyard dominates from its hilltop. What particularly appealed to Jean Gautreau was the location of the estate, the view of the Gironde estuary and the terroir - the same as that of Châteaux Montrose or Latour. Made up of Guntzian gravel on clayey layers whose freshness greatly pleases the Médoc grape varieties, it brings lightness and elegance to the wines. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean and offshore winds compensates for the sunshine and creates an optimal climate. The wine is aged in new barrels and the vines have an average age of 35 years. The result is one of the best unclassified wines of the Médoc.
With a beautiful dark ruby colour, the wine of Château Sociando-Mallet is structured and distinguished. Slightly woody, it brings magnificent aromas of red fruits whose juicy and tasty texture explodes in the mouth and on the nose. It can be kept for 20 to 30 years. Year after year, its richness and qualities increase. Built to wait patiently for its turn, it becomes extraordinary after one or even two generations.

Das Bouquet vereint sehr gut den Charme des Merlot und die Frische des Cabernet Sauvignon. Einladende Nuancen von dunklen Beeren, Cacaobohnen und Eukalyptus. Am Gaumen ist der Wein fein und ausgewogen. Seine Tannine sind seidig und verleihen eine ausgezeichnete Unterstützung. Schöne Fruchtintensität bis zum Abgang. Ein knackiger und schmackhafter Wein. "Ce vin est issu d'un vignoble sur des sols de graves et d'argiles sur sous-sol argilo-calcaire. L'âge moyen des vignes est de 25 ans et la densité de plantation atteint 8333 pieds/ha.
Le bouquet allie très bien le charme du Merlot et la fraîcheur du Cabernet Sauvignon. Invitantes nuances de baies noires, de fèves de cacao et d'eucalyptus. En bouche le vin est fin et équilibré. Ses tannins sont soyeux et confèrent un excellent soutien. Belle intensité fruitée jusqu'en fin de bouche. Un vin croquant et savoureux.
