Such a jewel protected in its case, the Château Haut-Lafitte and its vineyard rest in a clearing surrounded by a thick forest. In the South-East of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the wine is a Cru Classé de Graves. Already in 1365, a certain Verrier du Bosq acquired the property to grow vines. In the 18th century, a Scottish merchant, Georges Smith, bought the property and gave it his name. In the 1855 classification, Château Smith Haut Lafitte received the title of Grand Cru classé.
In 1958, the Eschernauer trading house took over and managed the vineyard until Florence and Daniel Cathiard, both ski champions in the 1960s, fell in love at first sight. Daniel was even part of the French team with Jean-Claude Killy. In 1985, they left their company in the supermarket sector to buy Château Smith Haut Lafitte, put all their energy into it and live there with their two daughters. The building was nicknamed "La belle endormie" (The sleeping beauty) and it was said at that time that the first wine was "the most serious of the serious". Both of them set out to take on a gigantic challenge, to put the war machine that is Smith Haut Lafitte back on the rails of excellence. In order to achieve this, they will invest relentlessly, renovating the cellars and vat room, replanting in biodynamic agriculture, analysing and mapping each plot, building a personal underground cooperage, recycling waste and finally organising the manual harvest, plot after plot using drones and ultra-modern technology. They will succeed, as the quality of an exceptional wine has been at the rendezvous for more than 10 years, especially since Robert Parker's 2009 score of 100/100 for the red and 98/100 for the white. Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte can boast of having reached, by combining ancestral knowledge (making natural compost, ploughing on horseback, no herbicides) with ultra-modernity (drones, vertical pressing, Vistalys optical sorting), a level of perfection unique in Bordeaux.
Today, Florence's daughters and Daniel Cathiard, Mathilde and Alice, accompanied by their husbands, have added their personal touch, creating the wellness and cosmetic chain, Caudalie, as well as a charming hotel centre. The gardens of the property also serve as a place for visitors to discover works of art such as Barry Flanagan's hare or Huang Yong Ping's sculptures.
The location of the Château high up in relation to the Lafitte vineyard probably explains its name. The soil on the hillside is made up of pebbles and semi-precious günzian gravel whose drainage qualities are renowned. Clay mingles with sand, quartz, with traces of iron oxide, constituting an ideal subsoil for the roots to cut their way deep and become enriched with mineral salts. The 67-hectare vineyard of Château Smith Haut Lafitte consists only of its own mother vine plants, creating a protected ecosystem. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up a good half of the grape variety, the rest is divided between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with a few Petit Verdot plants for the Reds. As for the Whites (11 hectares), the grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Gris and Sémillon. The wine is aged in tuns for 18 months, then in 60% new oak barrels.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte offers, in addition to the first wine, both white and red, a second wine: Les Hauts de Smith.
The first wine represents all the power and richness of the Pessac-Léognan terroir: depth and concentration. Wines that can be kept for a very long time, with a predominance of ripe black fruits and a characteristic smokiness. Both fresh and aromatic in its youth, it becomes opulent with age. The white is silky, rich in white fruit, brioche and the minerality of a powerful flint. As an accompaniment to food and wine, the Reds will go perfectly with a pan-fried porcini mushrooms, duck breast or stuffed guinea fowl, while the Whites will be sumptuous with crayfish chaplains or oysters from Arcachon.

Subtil, le bouquet du Petit Smith révèle des notes de garrigues, de myrtilles et de bois de réglisse complétées par des nuances épicées. Son attaque crémeuse confère de la dimension et assure un cheminement linéaire avec un milieu de bouche parfaitement tenu par des tannins compacts. La structure acide assure vivacité et tempérament, ce qui dynamise la fin de bouche. Un vin sapide et salivant qui doit encore assimiler sa vigueur et son austérité, mais les signaux envoyés sont réjouissants !

Sein cremiger Auftakt verleiht ihm Tiefe und sorgt für einen linearen Verlauf wobei der Mittelgaumen von kompakten Tanninen perfekt gestützt wird. Die Säurestruktur sorgt für Schwung und Temperament, was das Finale belebt. Ein würziger und saftiger Wein dessen Abgang die herbe Seite noch besser einbinden muss, aber das war er in Aussicht stellt ist vielversprechend.

Die Nase ist delikat, sehr nobel und komplex, rote und dunkle Beeren, ein Hauch Vanille, blonder Tabak, Cassis, Schwarztee, sehr, sehr sauber. Im Gaumen ist der Wein direkt, fruchtig und knackig, das ist wie ein Biss in perfekt reife Cassisbeeren, die Struktur hält sich dezent im Hintergrund, ist jedoch nicht zu unterschätzen, alle Elemente sind balanciert. Im Abgang überzeut dieser Wein mit viel Länge und Harmonie. Da gibt es viele Güter, die froh währen, einen Erstwein in dieser Qualität produzieren zu können. 2023-2036. 93/100
