Ornellaia's Serre Nuove is the second wine of the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. This wine is a good introduction to the great wines of Bolgheri.
Sixty kilometres south of Pisa, between the Mediterranean Sea and the gentle hills of Tuscany, lies the village of Bolgheri and next to it, the estate Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Created in 1981 by the Marquis Ludovico Antinori, one of the sons of the creator of Sassicaia, the latter decided to follow in his father's footsteps in the production of a "Super-Tuscan". He spotted this non-vineying terroir, but of which he saw all the potential and planted his first vines, all of course of Médoc grape varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc). In 1988, the first vintage of 1985 is presented to the public and it is a huge success! In 1999, the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia estate was sold to Robert Mondavi and now belongs to the Frescobaldi family. Since 2005, Axel Heinz, one of the world's most renowned oenologists, has been managing the production of Tenuta dell'Ornellaia wines, after having worked for a long time in Bordeaux. Year after year, La Tenuta obtains the highest marks from the greatest Italian and international critics.
Stretching over a hundred hectares, protected by the microclimate of the sea and the hills, the terroir is composed of alluvial, marine and volcanic soils. The latter seem to have been made to accommodate the Bordeaux grape varieties. Axel Heinz, with his talent and attention to detail, is constantly experimenting with new kinds of barrels, trying out different densities of vine plants, requiring strict manual harvesting and ageing in barrels. Above all, the quantity produced is limited in order to guarantee a certain standard of quality.
Five wines are produced by the Tenuta: the Ornellaia, the Volte, the Serre Nuove, Massetino and the Masseto.
The real "second wine" is the Serre Nuove, because it is made from the same strictly Bordeaux grape varieties as the Ornellaia. Generous and with a strong personality, it comes from younger vines, but is pampered in the same way as Ornellaia. It will be perfect with braised meat, a piece of lamb, venison stew or a piece of Peccorino.

Der Wein profitiert vom grossen Namen.Rating
Ist sehr intensiv, jedoch wenig abgerundet. Der hohe Alkoholgehalt mit 14,5 trägt zum Geschmack bei. Leicht alkoholiger Geschmack in der Nase. Vielleicht reift noch ein wenig aus.

Le 2006 est un vin puissant, qui exprime bien le terroir de la Maremma Toscane. Surprenant en bouche il est très rassurant sur la finale. Une acidité bien equilibrée, avec la rondeur du Merlot. Le rapport Qualité/Prix est certainement influencé par le Label "Ornellaia" et par le marketing "Antinori", mais il peut se justifier, car il s'agit d'un très bon vin.Rating - Review by Ernst
