Initially nicknamed "La hite" ("the hillock" in old Gascony) according to the locality located northwest of the village of Pauillac, Château de Lafite-Rothschild only became associated with the name Rothschild two centuries after the planting of its first vines in 1670. Its first owner, Jacques de Ségur, immediately produced great wines, appreciated by the English prime minister of the time. Jacques' son, also owner of Latour by marriage, was even nicknamed "Prince of the Vines" and established the reputation of his wines as a Grand Cru for ever. Also introduced to the Court of King Louis XV, it was drunk as much for its finesse as for its healing virtues.
For almost a century, the estate was sold several times, each time to owners who were attentive and passionate about this vineyard. Thomas Jefferson cited it as one of the Premiers Grands Crus and in 1855, this nomination among the greats was confirmed. Finally, in 1868, leaving the property of wealthy Dutch merchants, the estate really became Château Lafite-Rothschild following the acquisition by James de Rothschild, an English banker based in Paris and founder of the French branch. The latter will raise the wines of his generation to new heights and prices. Then came the lean cows with the wars, the 1929 crisis and diseases in the vineyard. In 1946, after enlisting with the allies and being taken prisoner, Elie de Rothschild decided to make up for lost time and reorganised the Château. Despite difficult years (frost in 1956), extraordinary vintages (1959 and 61) restored the splendour of Château Lafite-Rothschild. In 1962, Château Duhart-Milon was added to the family estate. When finally, in 1974, his nephew, Baron Eric de Rothschild took over the reins of the estate, with the aim of completely renovating it (thermo-regulated stainless steel vats added to the large traditional oak vats, titanic and magnificent circular and underground wine storehouse), the property extended over 112 hectares. In order to carry out his business successfully, Eric de Rothschild surrounds himself with an excellent technical team, including Charles Chevalier and Jacques Boissenot, a renowned oenologist.
The soils of the Château are composed of fine sandy gravel lying on limestone. The vines, ideally exposed to the south-west, are worked by hand in order to favour the quality and the good ripening of the grapes. Their average age is 39 to 45 years (the oldest for the Grand Vin). The grape varieties vary slightly according to the vintage, ranging in the great majority from 80 to 95% Cabernet Sauvignon to 5 to 20% Merlot, the rest being split between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The estate has been producing a second wine: "Les Carruades de Lafite" since 1980.
Eric de Rothschild also manages the company DBR (Domaines Baron de Rothschild) which is made up of 9 wineries, 6 of which are in the Bordeaux region. The company makes its own barrels, in La Tonnellerie des Domaines de Rothschild, in order to control their quality.
The reputation of Château Lafite-Rothschild among the five Premiers Crus as "Premier des Premiers" according to an expression dear to the estate makes it a mythical wine. Outstanding land, exceptional know-how and fantastic technical means have given this wine undeniable titles of nobility. Its tannins are subtle and refined, allowing it to be enjoyed fifty years later in great vintages. Its aromas are so delicate that their memory lingers on the palate in a bewitching way.

La finesse avec laquelle le bouquet des Carruades s'affiche évoque d'entrée la priorité dédiée à la définition riche en pixels Les notes de cassis et de menthe symbolisent explicitement la fraîcheur, alors que les détails et la finesse revendiquent la profondeur. L'attaque ne fait que confirmer la finesse dessinée par le bouquet. Le vin est précis et élégant, ce qui ne l'empêche évidemment pas de souligner la puissance dont il dispose sans pour autant l'appuyer. Il en fait usage avec une respectable pertinence et en l'associant à une structure aiguisée qui dessine à merveille les nombreux détails contribuant à ce vin autant harmonieux que tonique. Une superbe réussite qui annonce le grand vin avec une nonchalance époustouflante. Il aime son grand frère, mais il n'hésite pas une seconde à le défier !

Die Finesse, mit der sich das Bouquet von Carruades präsentiert, lässt von Anfang an erkennen, dass der Schwerpunkt auf einer detailreichen Darstellung liegt. Die Noten von schwarzer Johannisbeere und Minze stehen ganz klar für Frische, während die Details und die Finesse für Tiefe sorgen. Der Auftakt bestätigt nur die vom Bouquet gezeichnete Eleganz. Der Wein ist präzise und fein, was ihn natürlich nicht daran hindert, seine Kraft zu unterstreichen, ohne sie dabei zu sehr zu betonen. Er setzt sie mit beachtlicher Präzision ein und verbindet sie mit einer ausgefeilten Struktur, die die zahlreichen Details, die zu diesem ebenso harmonischen wie belebenden Wein beitragen, wunderbar hervorhebt. Ein großartiger Carruades, der den großen Wein mit atemberaubender Lässigkeit ankündigt. Er liebt seinen großen Bruder, zögert aber keine Sekunde, ihn herauszufordern!

Feinduftig, floral, rote Frucht, Kirsch-Traubenzucker; am Gaumen leichtfüssig im Auftakt, zeigt dann am mittleren Gaumen zupackende Gerbstoffe, die Frucht hält dagegen, der Wein ist schlank, zeigt dennoch Kraft, Power ohne ein Gramm Fett; erfreulich lang und salin im Finale, endet auf Blutorangen. Ein Zweitwein, der sich hinter manchem Grand Vin nicht verstecken muss. (Trinken von 2030 bis 2050)

Carruades verspricht von Anfang an Finesse und Subtilität. Er behauptet es nicht, er flüstert es und lässt so schöne Absichten erkennen. Und er hat Recht … Die Frische des Cabernet vermischt sich mit dem Charme des Merlot zu einer erfreulichen Symbiose. Die Fülle zeigt sich bereits im Auftakt. Sie ist nicht dominant, sondern einfach beruhigend und verleiht eine willkommene Gelassenheit. Carruades kündigt einen sehr großen Wein an, das ist seine Aufgabe, er ist Wegbereiter und erfüllt diese Aufgabe mit Bravour. Die noch etwas straffen Tannine stehen im Einklang mit der Spannung der Säurestruktur und der Abgang unterstreicht seine Eigenschaften, die der Frische von roten Beeren gewidmet sind.

D’entrée, Carruades sous-entend de la finesse et de la subtilité. Il ne l’affirme pas, il le chuchote et laisse donc entrevoir de belles finalités. Il a bien raison… La fraîcheur du Cabernet mêlée au charme du Merlot mène à une symbiose réjouissante. L’ampleur est affichée dès l’attaque. Elle n’est pas dominante, elle est simplement rassurante et confère une sérénité bienvenue. Carruades annonce un très grand vin, c’est son job, il est ouvreur de pistes et il assume cette tâche avec brio. Les tannins encore quelque peu serrés sont en phase avec la tension de la structure acide et la finale insiste sur ses aptitudes dédiées à la fraîcheur des baies rouges.
