The "Mas des Quernes" is the fruit of a fairy tale: created in 2010 by two events. First of all the meeting between two men, Jean Natoli, oenologist at the head of about twenty specialist advisers working in 300 wineries in the South of France, and Peter Riegel, wine merchant for over thirty years, distributing a thousand organic wines worldwide. Together, the two friends fell in love with a valley overlooked by terraced vineyards supported by dry stone walls. This is where they decided to create their own vineyard, on these terraces of the Larzac (with the appellation of the same name), north of Montpellier. The landscape is bucolic: hundred-year-old olive trees, a water source and the ruins of a Roman villa are reminiscent of Pagnol's novels. The Mas des Quernes originates from the English word "Cairn", referring to the theological stone constructions from Celtic times found in the region. In 2012, the estate will obtain organic certification for all its wines. In 2015, the winery and the cellar are being renovated to make room for further expansion of the property. In the team, Benjamin Lapeyre takes care of the vines and Pierre Natoli, Jean's son, has taken over sales.
The 12 hectares of terraces of the Mas des Quernes are located at the foot of Mont Baudile, which allows the temperature differences to be tempered. The soil is extremely diversified and is made up of very small siliceous pebbles that retain moisture well and marls. The vineyard, which Jean Natoli and Peter Riegel have taken great care of, is the sum of terroirs all specific to their grape variety, like a beautiful mosaic.
The Villa Romaine cuvée is composed of Mourvèdre, Carignan and Grenache Noir grapes. The robe is brilliant ruby red, the nose is powerful with ripe red and black fruits, with notes of garrigue, beeswax and toast. A wine for long ageing, with great length on the palate, it is opulent, powerful, fruity and the tannins are tight. It will go perfectly with a rib of beef, a piece of game or a piece of Saint-Nectaire.

Leuchtendes Rubinrot. Die Nase ist fruchtbetont und zeigt gleichzeitig Stein, hier treffen Wärme auf Kühle, würzige Noten, florale Töne. Im Gaumen cremig und rund, ein Mund voll Wein, bleibt dabei elegant, gut strukturiert, wirkt trotz der Fülle tänzerisch leicht, verfügt über eine ordentliche Menge an reifem Tannin und eine milde Säure. Im Abgang langanhaltend, ausgewogen, reiffruchtig und mit einem Hauch Vanille. Top gemacht, super sauber, eher modern, jedoch nicht langweilig. Kann reifen. 2016, Mas des Quernes «La Villa Romaine», Terrasses du Larzac, Languedoc, Frankreich. Kräftiges Rubin, violette Reflexe. In der Nase verführerisch und äusserst komplex, duftend nach reifen Brombeeren, Blaubeeren, Kirschen, Zimtgewürzen, Harz, Wachs sowie rauchigen Noten. Im Gaumen kraftvoll und rund, was für ein Auftakt, was für eine unglaubliche Frucht, äusserst voluminös, vollmundig, konzentriert und mit üppiger Frucht ausgestattet breitet sich der Wein aus, die Tannine sind seidenweich gewoben, verleihen Struktur, eine sehr schön eingebundene Säure verhindert, dass der Wein plump wirkt, die 14.5% Alkohol sind hier perfekt verpackt, alle Elemente top ausgewogen. Im Abgang von mittlerer Länge, endet äusserst stimmig auf eine reife Brombeerfrucht. Auch wenn dieser Wein durchaus einige Jahre Reserven hat frage ich mich: warum warten? Hier ist garantierter Trinkspass im Glas und zwar zu äusserst fairem Kurs. 2019-2025 geniessen, 18.5 vvPunkte (92/100).Rating - Review by Yves Beck

Pourpre aux reflets violets. Bouquet complexe révélant des notes florales et épicées. Je relève des effluves de poivre noir et de baies telles que cassis, myrtilles et cerises. Belle symbiose entre la fraîcheur et des touches confites. Très invitant. La fraîcheur est également présente en bouche et confère un caractère juteux. Les tannins ont des grains fins et du caractère. Ils sont de pair avec la structure et à eux deux ces éléments forment un ensemble harmonieux. Finale fruitée, rafraîchissante et persistante. Maintenant - 2030 92/100
