One of the wines that has ensured the reputation of the entire Pomerol appellation is undoubtedly Petrus (and not Pétrus or Château Petrus). It is currently one of the most sought-after wines, and its purchase price is among the highest in Pomerol, if not all of Bordeaux. This is assuming that the wine lover can find it, as it is very difficult to purchase.
It was in 1925 that Mrs. Loubat from Libourne purchased a part of Petrus' shares. In 1949, she bought the entire property, which at the time spanned 6.5 hectares of vineyards, planted with 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. In 1965, for inheritance reasons, the Baillencourt family, owners of Château Gazin, sold 5 hectares of vineyards, which were added to reach the current 11.5 hectares of Petrus vineyards. The current production of Petrus is about 30,000 bottles per year. Thus, the blend also changes, with around 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, growing in swelling black clay soils that serve as a natural drip irrigation system, only releasing the amount of water needed by the vine. These swelling clays are also known as smectites; they only cover 20 hectares in Pomerol, 90% of which is on Petrus' planting area. The rest is found in the subsoils of Château l'Evangile, Château Gazin, and Vieux Château Certan.
It was the tireless Mrs. Loubat who made Petrus famous across the globe, notably by serving this wine at Queen Elizabeth of England’s wedding banquet. The Libourne wine merchant Jean-Pierre Moueix also played a key role in spreading Petrus' renown, first by handling its international distribution and then gradually purchasing the shares of Mrs. Loubat and her niece, Lily Lacoste. Today, Christian Moueix manages the property with the help of winemaker Olivier Berrouet.
