The history of Bodegas Alion began when the Alvarez family acquired vineyards on the banks of the Duero River in 1986. The name of the Bodegas was inspired by their father's birthplace, the village of Leòn. The Alvarez family, who had already owned the famous Bodegas Vega Sicilia since 1982, which they had bought from Paul Neuman, a Venezuelan entrepreneur, set themselves a new challenge in the Ribera del Duero region. Wishing to produce more modern and quickly accessible wines, Pablo Alvarez, director of the various companies in the Alvarez group and creator of the successive wineries purchased by the family, has as his maxim about Vega Sicilia and Alion wines: "The best is yet to come, the best vintage must be the next". The other members of the Board of Directors are Marta (the President), Emilio, Elvira and Juan Alvarez.
The first vintages of Alion are blended in the Vega Sicilia facilities, but very soon Pablo Alvarez feels that the "little brother" of the myth should be allowed to take off on its own. The old facilities were renovated in 2000 at Bodegas Alion, in order to vinify everything on site.
The unique Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape variety, a famous local Ribera variety, will be enhanced by the meticulous and impeccable work of the team. The same high standards as for the Vega Sicilia wines are expected at Alion. The grapes are harvested by hand in 12 kg crates. The vinification is done in tuns and the ageing takes place in new barrels made by the oenologist Xavier Ausàs himself, which is almost exceptional in the wine world. He controls each stage of production, from the vineyard to the cellar. The result lives up to expectations and the first vintages were immediately acclaimed by international critics as an absolutely brilliant wine.
Described as fleshy, full-bodied, all round, the wines of Bodegas Alion bring the nuances of their maturation in selected new barrels. With its deep purple colour, Alion has an open, slightly toasted and vanilla nose. Ripe black berries explode on the palate, with hints of prune, providing an intense and complex flavour. Perfect with a platter of charcuterie or full-bodied cheeses.

c'est un très grand vin que je connais depuis de nombreuses années et si je l'ai pu acheter à l'époque à un prix extrêmement intéressant, soit à PTAS 3'000 environ ou inférieur (CV d'environ CHF 30.-- ou Euro 20.--), aujourd'hui, il vaut tout de même son prix, puisque l'on peut le comparer à d'autres grands vins d'autres régions, même à un grand vin bordelais. C'est un grand vin du Ribera del Duero que nous ouvrons avec plaisir à des grands connaisseurs qui l'apprécient toujours!Rating
Bien entendu, il y a aujourd'hui aussi d'autres excellents vins en Espagne, par exemple dans le Priorat (Gran Cuore, Ex 7 7, Gran Claustro, pour ne nommer que trois que je connais personnellement).

Au nez je sens du fruit (pruneau ?), a une belle longueur et des tannins élégants, voire souples, son goût est un mélange de minéralité et de fruits murs. Je peux recommander ce vin à tout amateur de vins espagnols, sachant que ceux de la "Ribeira del Duero" sont parmi les meilleurs d'Espagne.Rating - Review by Adrian

Tiefdunkle Farbe. In der Nase dunkle Beeren, dazu auch eine frische, fast orientalische Würze. Am Gaumen ungemein viel Stoff ohne plump zu wirken. Massen an feinen Gerbstoffen, die dem Wein ein langes Leben versprechen. Sehr langer Abgang, der mich irgendwie an Pape Clément 2003 erinnert... Alion 2004 macht bereits 2008 Trinkspass, dürfte sich aber über mindestens 10 Jahre sehr gut halten. Für mich klar der beste Alion, den ich bisher verkosten durfte.Rating - Review by Daniel
