Situated in the Maremma, in Tuscany between the Tyrrhenian coast and the hills of Bolgheri, the Tenuta San Guido and its little jewels that are the Sassicaia, the Guidalberto and the Difese are due to the visionary dream and perseverance of one man, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. The new implantation in Italy of a grape variety from Bordeaux that flourishes wonderfully on an extraordinary terroir has allowed the creation of the now famous "Super Tuscans". His son, Nicolo della Rocchetta, has been running Tenuta San Guido for forty years.
The vineyard of the Tenuta San Guido extends over 90 hectares, some parts on the hill, at an altitude of 300m. Taking advantage of the microclimate, which brings cool sea air in summer and mild weather in winter, the area has been home to a natural bird reserve created by the Marquis della Rocchetta since the 1950s. Originally, the infrastructure was installed in the Castiglioncello of Bolgheri. But with the acquisition of new land, a new building was constructed in the sixties in the Alley of Cypress, near the Chapel of Saint Guido, hence the name of the Tenuta.
Sassicaia: Already in the 1920s, the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamed of introducing the typical Bordeaux grape variety, Cabernet Sauvignon, to Tuscany. This was a drastic change from the tradition of Sangiovese and Nebbiolo grapes, which are usual in these regions. After his marriage to Clarice della Gherardesca in 1930, both fascinated by the world of horse racing, he decided to produce his own wine thoroughbred. Settling on the land of his wife's ancestor, Count Guido Alberto, an innovator in 19th century farming, he brought back a few grafts of Cabernet Sauvignon that he was going to plant on this rocky soil, so similar to the Bordeaux gravel. The first vintages are tasted with family and a few friends. Some vintages are kept and provoke general admiration when they are drunk. In the sixties, Le Marquis planted a second vineyard in the village of Bolgheri. He will call it Sassicaia but will still keep it for his intimates. However, he was convinced by his brother-in-law Nicolo Antinori, whose son created Ornellaia, to market his nugget and hire an oenologist, Giacomo Tachis. The 1968 vintage is presented to the public as a simple "Vino da Tavola". Success was immediate, creating the legend of the "Super-Tuscans". The reception is worthy of the Bordeaux Premiers Crus! A special appellation (DOC) Bolgheri Sassicaia is even registered only for the Tenuta San Guido.
A low yield per hectare results in very well-balanced grapes, rich in sugar, tannins and flesh. Sassicaia is truly the thoroughbred that the Marquis della Rocchetta dreamed of, with its 95% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pourpre violacé. Bouquet intense, subtil, aux notes épicées et fruitées. Belle complexité. Je relève des parfums de myrtilles, de mûres ainsi qu’une touche fumée. Mise en bouche racée, légèrement friande et racée. Au palais, le vin est marqué par sa structure et par des tannins serrés, qui se révèlent lentement en fin de bouche. Un vin de caractère qui aura besoin de temps pour s’épanouir. Finale intense et persistante. Une grande réussite. 2022–2047 98/100

Violettes Purpur. Ausladendes Bouquet, subtil und komplex. Finessenreich mit Blaubeeren, Brombeeren und einer leicht rauchigen Note. Rassiger aber auch leicht charmanter Auftakt. Am Gaumen ist der Wein von seiner Struktur geprägt. Sie wird für einiges an Lagerungspotenzial sorgen. Die Tannine sind kräftig, dicht und treten langsam am Gaumenende auf. Ein charaktervoller Wein mit intensivem und anhaltenden Abgang. Ein grosser Wein. 2022–2047 98/100

2015, Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia, Toskana (Bordeaux Blend): Mittleres Rubin, aufgehellter Rand. Sehr nobles Bouquet, floral, verspielt, spannungsvoll mit Kräutern, Blumen, kandierten Früchten, roten Kirschen, etwas Leder, sehr komplex. Im Gaumen seidenweich im Auftakt, breitet sich dann aus, wird strukturierter, zeigt Dichte und Kraft, bleibt dabei hochelegant, ausgesprochen feines Tannin, perfekt integrierte Säure, leichtfüssig und mit Charakter zieht sich der Wein im Abgang sehr lange hin, endet rotfruchtig auf Sauerkirschen und Himbeeren. 2014, San Guido, Sassicaia, Toskana (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc): Mittleres Rubin, heller Rand. Sehr feine Nase, wunderbar tief und komplex, erinnert an einen schönen Bordeaux, zeigt dazu viel würze und getrocknete Kräuter, verändert sich mit Luft, wird verspielter. Fast etwas verhaltener Auftakt, dann breitet sich der Wein aus, rotfruchtig, klar und sehr filigran, die Tannine sind fein gewoben, die Säure markiert, fast schon burgundisch elegant ist dieser Wein, leichter bis mittlere Körper, getragen von einer sehr guten Struktur, das ist kein Kraftprotz sondern ein eleganter Wein mit sehr schöner Länge.
