The Chateau Pape Clément, located a few kilometers from Bordeaux, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, has more than 750 years of vine cultivation behind it. Indeed, the first harvest dates back to the year 1252 and at that time it was called Domaine de la Mothe. In 1299, a certain Gaillard de Goth bought the vineyard and bequeathed it to his brother Bertrand upon his death. Bertrand de Goth was none other than the future Pope Clement V, appointed by Philip the Fair in 1305. The property thus became Château Pape Clément and the Pope himself devoted a real devotion and passion to it, to the point of developing vine growing in the Rhone Valley and around Avignon. The estate remained in the hands of the Archbishopric of Bordeaux for five centuries, until the French Revolution.
After many ups and downs, a certain Jean-Baptiste Clerc became the owner in 1858 and decided to invest in the estate by building the Château in its current neo-gothic form and replanting some thirty hectares. The Château then enjoyed its glory days, until the First World War, but was totally neglected and partially destroyed by a violent storm in 1937. In 1939, Paul Montagne saved it from destruction and set about restoring the cellars and the vineyard. In 1959, the classification of the Graves Grands Crus Classés awarded it the rank of Second Grand Cru of the Médoc. After a few years of depression again, Théo Montagne's son-in-law, Bernard Magrez, bought the Château in the 1980s it was his first vineyard, followed by many fruitful others (no less than 42! to the point that in Bordeaux he was nicknamed "The man who was worth forty châteaux"). Today, Jeanne Lacombe, the last technical director to arrive, manages the property on a daily basis from the top of her 27 years old.
The quality of his vines is the priority of Bernard Magrez, who will succeed in restoring to Château Pape Clément all the fame acquired since the Middle Ages. Thanks to him and to the advice of Michel Rolland, the wines are once again at the level of the Second Great Growths. Parcel vinification, as well as maturing in different vats were introduced. In 2003, a new winery and in 2007 a new vat room, an uncompromising work, the association of modernity (use of drones, genodic, electric traction, self-steering tractors) with ancestral habits, an ultra-demanding sorting and leaf-thinning and finally a terroir blessed by the Gods rich in iron have allowed Château Pape Clément to obtain the mythical score of 100/100 at Parker in 2009 for the white, followed by the red. The wines are aged 18 months in barrels (70% new). Château Pape Clément is one of the few to benefit from the "terroir with high environmental value" certification.
Blackcurrant, blackberry and morello cherry are strongly present on the nose, in a robe with purplish tints. The tannins are elegant, the freshness is immediate. It is a wine to be kept for a very long time.

Die Eleganz dieses Weins zeigt sich schon beim ersten Schnuppern! Ebenso wie seine Komplexität. Das Profil wurde offensichtlich aktualisiert, ohne den Wein dabei drastisch zu verändern. So kommen die Liebe zum Detail und die Vielschichtigkeit besonders gut zur Geltung. Er strebt nicht nach Brillanz, sondern nach Subtilität. Am Gaumen besticht der Wein durch seinen cremigen Auftakt. Er glänzt durch seine Harmonie, sein Temperament und seine Fähigkeit, eine Einheit aus Feinheit, Vitalität und Fülle zu schaffen. Die salzige Note im Abgang unterstreicht die vorhandene Dynamik und fördert die Frische und den Nachhall. Ein Wein, dessen geschmacklicher Ausdruck sich noch weiterentwickeln muss. Der Ausbau wird das in die richtige Richtung lenken.

L'élégance de ce vin est relatée d'entrée par le bouquet ! La complexité également. Le profil a manifestement été actualisé, sans pour autant bouleverser le vin. Ce sont le focus sur les détails et la pluralité qui sont ainsi valorisés. Il ne cherche pas l'éclat, mais effectivement la subtilité. En bouche, le vin bénéficie de l'apport crémeux de son attaque. Il s'illustre par son harmonie, pas son tempérament, par son aptitude à créer l'unité entre délicatesse, vivacité et volume. La touche saline en fin de bouche souligne la dynamique présente en favorisant la fraîcheur et la persistance. Un vin qui doit encore cristalliser son expression gustative. L’élevage saura ajuster cela.

Subtile Reduktion, weisser Pfirsich, Kräuterwürze, Zitrusfrüchte, feuchter Kieselstein; der Gaumen zeigt eine gewissen Opulenz, ohne dabei schwerfällig zu wirken, knackige Frucht, getragen von einer feinen Säure, langanhaltendes, salines Finale, endet auf Grapefruit und eine pfeffrige Würze.

Pape clément blanc peine à s'exprimer, respectivement il chuchote, ce qui n'est pas vraiment dans ses habitudes. En lui laissant un peu de temps, il révèle des nuances de mirabelles et d'anis suivies d'une touche de poivre blanc. J'ai rarement dégusté Pape Clément autant filigrane ; cela surprend quelque peu, mais au final il ne faut pas s'occuper de ce que l'on sait, mais de ce que l'on a dans le verre. Cela aide à aller de l'avant ! Un vin tout en finesse, porté par une acidité structurante et de fins amers qui assurent l'expression aromatique et la longueur de la finale. Bernard Magrez nous a habitué à des virages à 180 degrés… et c'est pour le bien du vin en l'occurrence.

Pape Clément blanc hat Mühe, sich auszudrücken, bzw. er flüstert, was nicht gerade seine Gewohnheit ist. Wenn man ihm ein wenig Zeit lässt, offenbart er Nuancen von Mirabellen und Anis, gefolgt von einem Hauch von weißem Pfeffer. Ich habe Pape Clément selten so filigran verkostet; es überrascht ein wenig, aber letztendlich sollte man sich nicht mit dem beschäftigen, was man weiß, sondern mit dem, was man im Glas hat. Das hilft, nach vorne zu schauen! Ein Wein voller Finesse, der von einer strukturierenden Säure und feinen Bitternoten getragen wird. Letztere fördern die Aromatik und stimmen das Finale anhaltend. Bernard Magrez hat uns an 180-Grad-Wendungen gewöhnt ... und das ist in diesem Fall zum Wohle des Weins.

Die Nase ist etwas verhaltener als beim Domaine de Chevalier, Pfirischnoten, zitrische Aromen, auch etwas Nussiges schwingt mit. Der Gaumen ist reichhaltig, rund, viel Schmelz, dichter Fruchtkern, baut im mittleren Gaumen aus und zieht sich im Abgang lange hinaus, endet auf Grapefruit und hinterlässt ein salziges Mundgefühl.
