Situated between Orange and Vaison-la-Romaine, in the very South of the Rhone Valley, the vines of Domaine la Soumade comprise 26 hectares in the commune of Rasteau and one hectare in the North of the commune of Gigondas. In the shade of the Dentelles de Montmirail, they flourish on one of the most beautiful terroirs of the Rhône Valley, made up of clay-limestone soils and whose very essence is to produce a powerful wine.
"André Roméro is the figurehead of the Rasteau appellation. Now with the help of his son Frédéric and the advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt, they produce colourful and complex wines with dense body. The range explores all the facets of Rasteau's terroirs, including those outside the appellation. The VDNs are pure delicacies. The Romeros are known for their wines with deep characters and great tannic matter, with a good ageing potential " Guide Bettane et Desseauve 2019.
Originally, in 1979, André Roméro undertook to create the Domaine la Soumade on only 5 hectares. In 1990, he started bottling directly on the estate. In 1996, his son, Frédéric, joined him after obtaining his "BEPA" in viticulture and oenology. Together, they built new cellars and a new vat room in 2002 and began a collaboration with the talented winemaking consultant, Stéphane Derenoncourt, known for his ability to extract slender wines that are true to the terroir. In July 2010, the reds obtained the village appellation. Today, Domaine la Soumade wines are exported to some twenty countries.
Thanks to Stéphane's advice, André and Frédéric Roméro will experiment with methods that will develop the finesse that is also present in the Rhône Valley. The blend is classic for the Rasteau region: 70% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. The vines are generally between 30 and 50 years old. The vineyard is cultivated in a reasoned way, either by using organic compost when necessary or by using "bouillie bordelaise" (sulphur and copper) in case of mildew or powdery mildew. Harvesting is done by hand and sorting is then carried out by the whole team.
The Cuvée Prestige, whose vines can even reach the age of 110 years (!), is particularly powerful and structured. Its robe is dark graining. At first, on the nose, it may appear a little abrupt, then the velvety smoothness of ripe black fruits and spices can be felt. On the palate, it is melting and greedy and its length is astonishing, with aromas of cherry, plum and blackberry to finish on spicy notes and the tannic side typical of Grenache. Accompanied by a beautiful piece of beef or lamb couscous, it will do wonders. Can be kept from 5 to 10 years.

Reduktive Nase, braucht viel Luft, springt nicht gleich aus dem Glas. Im Gaumen saftig, konzentriert, zeigt dennoch Eleganz, die Tannine sind von sehr guter Qualität, die Säure hält frisch. Sehr gute Länge. Ich kenne den Wein aus anderen Jahren, in seiner Jugend ist er immer etwas sperrig, doch dieser Wein zeigt sich am Gaumen bereits sehr zugänglich. 2-3 Jahre Kellerreife und dann geht die Post ab. Achtung, nix für Kuscheltrinker... 2023 bis 2035

Quel bouquet complexe aux notes épicées et fruitées. Au palais le vin est frais, dense et doté de tannins subtiles, très fins et même un peu suaves. La structure soutient parfaitement l'expression aromatique jusqu'en fin de bouche. Finale chaleureuse. 2021-2032 92/100

Was für ein komplexes Bouquet mit würzigen und fruchtigen Noten. Am Gaumen ist der Wein frisch, dicht und mit subtilen, sehr feinen und sogar etwas süßen Tanninen versehen. Die Struktur unterstützt den aromatischen Ausdruck perfekt bis zum Abgang. Etwas warm im Abgang. 2021-2032 92/100

2016, Cuvée Prestige, Domaine la Soumade, Rasteau (70% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre). Leuchtendes Rubin, im Kern fast Schwarz. Anfang verschlossene Nase, braucht aktuell noch Zeit und viel Luft, duftet dann nach dunklen Beeren, Backpflaumen, Schwarzen Kirschen und Garrique-Kräutern, sehr komplex und mit Luft immer schöner werdend. Im Auftakt ist der Wein kraftvoll aber nicht breit, satte Frucht, körperreich und mit cremiger Textur zeigt der Wein viel markantes, noch jugendliches Tannin, dieses ist fein gewoben, trägt die Frucht und harmoniert sehr gut mit der saftigen Säure. Aromatisch wieder deutlich dunkelfruchtig mit Noten von Pflaumen, Brombeeren und schwarzen Kirschen, endet der Wein auf eine feine Würzigkeit. Ein sehr authentischer, charaktervoller Südfranzose der (so jung getrunken) unbedingt dekantiert und am besten zu einem herzhaften Essen serviert werden sollte.
