The Chateau owes its origin to a knighted bourgeois of the 17th century, Master Jean de Moytié, who became the owner of a vineyard planted on a hill made of gravel. A visionary, he understood that his terroir produced wines out of the ordinary and made the cru Mont-Moytié a famous cru for its time. In 1740, his successor, Alexandre de Gascq-Léoville wanted to turn his estate into a small empire: he therefore bought land, making what is still the entire Château Léoville, the largest wine-growing estate in the Médoc with its 120 hectares!
In 1776, the descendant inherits the whole, although producing 4 different wines. In 1826, Hugh Barton acquired two of the four estates, giving birth to Château Léoville Barton. In 1840, Château Léoville Las-Cases was created, being bought by Adolphe de Lacase and, in the following years, Château Léoville Poyferré, the latter belonging to Jeanne, married to Jean-Marie Poyferré. The name means, at the time, "point ferré", the place on the road where the horses had to be shoed! The estate obtained the title of Second Growth classified in the 1855 Saint-Julien classification. The troubles then began, with the bunches of grapes contaminated first by powdery mildew and then by phylloxera, which forced it to sell to the Lalande trading house, Edouard Lawton's father-in-law. The latter managed the estate from 1888 until 1920, when the Cuvelier family, a large wine trading house based in the North, became the owners (but the Lawton house coat of arms: half a howling wolf will be kept). Two brothers will run the business: one, Paul Cuvelier, in Haubourdin, the other, Max, in Bordeaux. Max's children, especially Didier, manage the various acquisitions, including Château Léoville-Poyferré.
The installations have been completely redone, the vineyard has been restructured and optimised on its 80 hectares, a team ready to work according to ancient and environmentally friendly techniques, a completely new vat room, Château Léoville-Poyferré can finally demand the best from itself. Being located on one of the most sought-after soils of the Saint-Julien appellation and in the middle of the greatest Classified Growths, the soil is composed of gravel, pebbles and sand, deposited during the quaternary by the Garonne river. The terroir is difficult, forcing the plant to dig deeper and deeper to find its nutrients, but drainage is naturally efficient. Harvesting is done by hand and maturing takes place for 18 to 20 months in new wooden barrels, bringing a slightly woody taste to the tannins. Michel Rolland is always present at the time of the plot vinification. Four grape varieties share this splendid terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon in majority, then Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in small quantities finally.
The wine is dark red in appearance, almost black. On the nose, it is complex, with black fruits (black cherry and blackcurrant) and liquorice dominating, but violets and cedar wood appearing discreetly. The palate is lively at first, then mellow, velvety and full. The tannins are sappy, leaving a creamy, yet fresh impression. Already very pleasant in its youth, it takes shoulders with time and the years give it all the elegance of its rank.

D'entrée, le bouquet stigmatise la précision et les détails. Certes, il ne se cache pas de son aptitude charmante et invitante, mais il souligne qu'il a pour ambition de d'abord convaincre. C'est très stratégique ; le plaisir viendra ensuite ! De bonne densité, le vin bénéficie de l'appui de tannins compacts et veloutés qui ont néanmoins du relief. Ils assurent puissance et tenue et sont en phase avec la fraîcheur d'une acidité qui dessine les contours du vin avec pertinence. Un vin structuré et persistant.
